Trotter and I were just talking about this the other day.

They must have re-negotiated publishing rights with the Estate to be able to put forth a new edition.

It would be HarperCollins rather than the estate, I think.

Also, how do we know it's a "new" edition? The original agreements seem to have allowed them to reprint (including new binding & presentations) for a very, very long time. [On the face of it; none of us obviously know the agreements.]

No idea, based on the context of their social media post, one can surmise that it's Alan Lee illustrated.

Based on the insta story of the FS, we can see that the illustration with the ring is actually the front free end paper of the book(s). The style, stroke, colour palette, looks really Alan Leeish to me. Alan worked with the FS in the past by illustrating the limited edition of the Wanderer some years ago.
My bet is we will see the first one-volume illustrated FS LotR...

FS saw HC made so much money with the recent LotR edition, they want their cut too.

Although some wallets (like mine) may be depleted, so I would need to skip this one.
