Maybe I am not remembering correctly but I think that the 1956 and earlier HMCO Hobbits always sold at these quite high prices (and higher) even pre pandemic.

You're definitely right on the early 50's prints with jackets, particularly the 5th and 6th prints. However the copies in not so great shape or missing jackets used to sit for ages. I remember an 8th print and a 9th print that sat for nearly a year at around $100 before being sold for under that.
