St George device

I believe that it comes from the logo for the publisher George Allen, which was then modified for George Allen & Unwin, when it was bought by Sir Stanley Unwin during WWI.

I can't explain the anomaly of the 8th in a 9th dustwrapper - No St George device.

This has reminded me that I am missing the 5th, 6th and 9th impressions, so if anyone has spares of these, please contact me!

(There is a similar trend in TT and RoTK but I haven't checked every copy that I have.)

Your 8th in a 9th dustwrapper is most likely the 1960 9th with the printers error of dropping the 8th printing of 1959. Noted in The Tolkien Collector #20

I think the logo is at the back of all the impressions on the address page.

My 8th in a 9th wrapper has the St George device. Is your half title page missing, or is it present but without the device?

Here's a couple of pics of my 8th in a 9th dustwrapper. As you can see, it is quite clear. There is no St George device on the title page.

It looks like your's is an Eighth in a Ninth Dustjacket. If it was the printers error it would look like the attached 9th in a 9th dustjacket (showing Eighth in 1960 printing)
