Apparently some moron thinks he can publish a sequel to the Lord of The rings called “The Fellowship of The King” and sell it on Amazon?? Has anyone heard of this??

Isn't all of Tolkien's works entering into the public domain soon?
(Nevermind, I just looked it up. 20 more years :D)

I’m curious, what made you ask? Is there some definition of “soon” that makes it ok to violate copyright, in your mind?

Going deeper into the rabbit hole, Amazon is displaying this guy as a co-author for Fellowship of the Ring. What the?

Seems this fella has been working on this for years. link
He claims it's a 7 book series... He calls it a "parody sequel", whatever that means.

You just looked it up? Where are you getting 20 years from? Source? I'm curious the information you read that says all of Tolkien's books will enter the public domain in 2043?

It may not be an official answer but copyright in the UK is 70 years after the authors death, Canada is 50 years I read, US is longer. There are several discussions on the internet if you google "Tolkien Copyright" which if you believe 70yrs is 2043. I make no legal claim on the validity of this though so it could be more complex if lawyers become involved. The following is the most indepth
https://scifi.stackexchange.com/questi ... -expire-on-tolkiens-works
Plus there is the russian free download sequel written from a Mordor perspective - good luck enforcing that copyright
Christopher is listed as the copyright holder (along with the Tolkien Estate Limited) in all modern editions - the first edition lists George Allen & Unwin as the copyright holder. I think it fair to say that Christopher is considered the "owner" of the copyright, as far as when it might fall into public domain.
We will be long dead before any of this material is in the public domain. It may never end up in the public domain, given ongoing extensions to copyright as a global thing.

And there are so many caveats too. Like with Lord of the Rings, Christopher's map will be in copyright when the Rings text is not. Who on earth would want a Lord of the Rings without the original maps? Heathens ?
