Note that this letter is delivered simply “By hand” (top right of envelope), rather than the more usual “North Pole Post” (since Letter from Father Christmas to John Tolkien • 22 December 1920 (#1926)), though letters have been known to come by various other means in the past: “by Southern Post” in Letter from Father Christmas to John and Michael Tolkien • 20 December 1926 (#1931), “by direct Reindeer Post” in Letter from Father Christmas to John, Michael and Christopher Tolkien, also Aslaug, Mummy, Auntie Jennie, and Daddy • 21 December 1927 (#1939), by “special messenger” in Christmas Letter from Father Christmas to John, Michael and Christopher Tolkien • 20 December 1928 (#1940), by “CHIMNEY POST” in Letter from Father Christmas to John, Michael, Christopher and Priscilla Tolkien • 30 November 1932 (#2226), and “By gnome-carrier” in Letter from Father Christmas to John, Michael, Christopher and Priscilla Tolkien • 23 December 1932 (#1954). This delivery most resembles that of Christmas 1928, which came “direct”.
