For Tolkien's gown - I was thinking of Rick Gekoski's book in which he describes buying and selling Tolkien's old college gown. Going back and re-reading it now, I see that the only transactions recorded in his book are when he bought it in 1972, and when he sold it in 1982. So, not post-movies!
