Just wondering, were there no concerns about he authenticity of the initials? They look a little shaky...

I was referring to the antique book from Tolkien's library...thanks for responding.

I certainly wouldn't ever assume they *were* written by Tolkien. No real evidence either way. The label is a good indicator that the book was part of his library, though.

Yes, I agree with Stu here, probably not, and if they are, we have no way of ever knowing.

I think this listing in particular is interesting for the price tag on the box, which I hadn't seen before (though the glue residue from it is visible on other boxes I have seen).

Also very interesting are the Diana Paxton fan dust-jackets that were included with Niekas - there were many in 1965 that didn't like Remington's art, and these wrappers were a popular cover. They were loosely included (not stapled) in Niekas and usually used or lost, thus not easy to find.

1963 A&U Deluxe set incl Slipcase

First Edition. 3-volume set, 1st edition, 13th, 10th, and 10th impressions. The first deluxe edition of The Lord of the Rings in a slipcase with triptych view of Middle-Earth by Pauline Baynes. Bound in black Winterbottom's Buckram 72, Thames Improved Quality boards, Grosvenor Chater's Glastonbury quality grey endpapers, all edges gilt, head and tail bands, grey ribbon bookmarks. No dust jackets, as issued. Slipcase rubbed and dented with off-set fading of old label on the top edge. Covers are slightly rubbed due to tightly-fitted slipcase.
