Is there a resource for official maps? Pics, size, changes made? Eventually I'd like a framed one, but size, appearance and history would all feed into which I would want. I've only found some very vague (and sometimes contradictory) information so far. I wish I'd found this site a decade ago!
I too would like a nice framed map (particularly, the Beleriand map published in the Silmarillion), but I only know of these Bodleian POD items, which include the two Hobbit maps, an annotated LotR Middle-earth map, and the earliest Silmarillion map draft. Possibly copyright-related reasons? Not to mention the map was drawn by Christopher and he has a copyright line in the 1977 Silmarillion. There's also Brian Sibley and John Howe's The Maps Of Tolkien's Middle-earth, which is being re-released again soon.
Others will, I'm sure, be able to supply more details, particularly about items that can only now be purchased by auction.

That print on demand link is going to eat so much of my money! I'd seen three of those Tolkien pieces available as in A3 size, but couldn't convince myself that was large enough.
The 'ultimate' map resource is with the French site Tolkiendil:

I suppose Google Translate might be your friend on this...
And some of the maps are officially reproduced by Museoteca.

I think that Museoteca is selling exactly the same pieces as the Bodleian POD site. In fact the Bodleian site is a sub-site in the Museoteca domain. Just in case people wanted to compare.
Yes, I am one of the author, and also the vice-president of Tolkiendil Society. Apparently we didn't think of that, no ! This is a good idea, though. But I need to do some researches on that, for I'm not sure we know the size for each one of them... and in all cases, it's not something that I can do in a near future.
If you decide to do it, this group could probably help, if members were willing to measure their copies?Druss wrote:

Greetings,
I have at times, over the years, attempted to discover the dimensions of a few of Tolkien's illustrations and maps that interest me. Of course, the dimensions of many of the maps may be inferred from the accompanying grid and legend. The illustrations, however, are largely context-free, and even though the various art books (e.g. J.R.R.Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator) provide many valuable details about the included artwork, dimensions are not amongst those details.
Eventually though, finding nothing new on the subject, I tire of the pursuit and lay it aside until the fit takes me once again. Until now I never thought to ask whether anyone else might know, or know where to find such.
You might wonder why I care about this. Well, there are a few of his illustrations that I would be keen to have as framed prints suitable for display (like from The Bodleian Shop). However, I would like any such print to be a 1-to-1 facsimile, as it were, of the original work.
So, that's my question. What are the dimensions of Tolkien's various drawings and illustrations? Does anyone have any guidance on this matter?
Thanks!
