I'm always amazed by how these cost next to nothing, how many must have been sold (they are so readily available), and how most of them are unread. Anyhow, I finally bought one to wrap up my 1970s paperback boxed sets.

Excellent finds Stu. I have that PB boxset as well, unread like yours. Although I can't find it at the moment, must be in a bin somewhere.

They seem to be available pretty much all the time here in NZ (very unusual for there not to be at least one set up for sale). I finally coughed up the NZD 12.50 (about £6) to get one as it seemed a bit daft not to have it when I have all the other boxed sets from that era. Also, in these bubble times, I can't afford any of the other stuff!!!

Poor Stu. Reduced to buying 1970's paperbacks in these overinflated times...

Just received these in quite good condition from 1961-62 (12th, 8th, 9th). Unfortunately no dust jackets but I’m happy to report that there are no issues with folded and uncut pages. Nor any fluctuations in page colour. Paper quality could be better but for $70, I think it’s a keeper.

Last month I was walking down 4th Avenue in New York City and stumbled upon a used/rare book store that I had never before frequented. I wasn’t sure what I would find but thought I would zip in and check out their books.

And wouldn’t you know, they had in a glass case a UK 1937 2nd Impression Hobbit. And it was in good shape. So, I had to grab it…
