Signature of artist 'appears' to be E.V. Gordon.
You should always exercise good judgement and perform appropriate due-diligence when acquiring signed items to ensure that you are satisfied with the provenance and integrity of any item you bid on.
I think it looks alot like this picture.
Tolkien 1925
Garm pointed out this picture might be from the 30s
I think our standard boilerplate for signatures needs to be added to this item, in relation to it being a portrait of J.R.R. Tolkien by E.V. Gordon.

It could very well be a drawing done of this photo, it has been pointed out to me that the dimensions are virtually identical of the drawing and the photo.

I’ve overlaid the two using Photoshop and the match is almost exact – to the extent that any divergence may be due to my inaccuracy. One image is a full overlay, with the sketch semitransparent. The other is half photo, half sketch. If it were genuine, EV Gordon would have had to have copied it from the photo, not from life. I’ve seen Gordon’s signature, but I don’t have a copy of it that I can check.
Thank you Trotter and Lowdham! Does anyone have an E.V. Gordon signature we can compare with this one?

It went for £1,131! Too much that seemed off to me.
